Abstract
Quality assurance (QA) procedure is critical to ensure patient safety and maintain the clinical efficiency in high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) surgery. This study considers a practical kit for HIFU QA such that the thermal legion produced by HIFU is visualized in an optically transparent tissue mimicking phantom. Images of the legion formed in the phantom are fed via CCD cameras to a computer which simultaneously quantifies geometrical properties of the lesion, namely, the location in relation to the focal position, width, depth and volume of the legion. This tool kit performed fully automated alignment between HIFU transducer, TMM Phantom and CCD cameras and indicating focal depth. This new HIFU QA tool kit was tested using an experimental 1.1 MHz HIFU system. It is expected that the computerized visualization of the thermal legion, with the improved tissue mimicking phantom, will serve as a practical tool in performance tests and QA in general of HIFU systems.
